Deep work has changed the way I approach my life and my eCommerce business. By making it one of my top priorities for 2018, I have changed the way I think about projects and have reaped benefits that come from long periods of uninterrupted work. On this episode of Marketing For eCommerce, I share with you why I believe deep work has the power to revolutionize 2019 for you and your business, and it’s an episode not to be missed. Listen now!

The average American’s attention span is 7 seconds, but you can beat that statistic

A recent study has shown that the average American’s attention span is a mere seven seconds - down from 20 minutes in the 1980s. While we often label this as being able to “multitask better,” it actually prevents us from thinking deeply about the issues, questions, and ideas on our minds. Famous thinkers like Albert Einstein solved the world’s most pressing scientific questions through deep work - and that work didn’t occur in 20-30 minute segments.

Deep work allows you to break through the mindset of “urgent and not important”

As explained in the popular book, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” falling into the trap of “urgent but not important” can wreck your day and leave you feeling unproductive. Rather than give your attention to every single notification, ping, and tweet that comes your way, set aside blocks of time where you focus exclusively on one portion of your project. Claim back your time and your attention by giving this method of productivity a try.

Learn to reap the benefits of the compounding insights that come with deep work

For every hour spent in deep work, you’ll find that you’ll start to benefit from what I call “compounding insights.” What was confusing at the start of your deep work session can become increasingly clear as you spend more time thinking deeply about the problem. You’ll have to fight the temptation to check your email or social media accounts after the first 30 minutes or so, but I promise it’ll be worth it at the end of the day.

Set yourself up for success in 2019 by making periods of deep work your #1 focus

You can make 2019 a year of big breakthroughs if you set aside time for deep work in the upcoming first quarter. Start with an hour or two, and work your way up to four, six, or even full day sessions of deep work. Intense focus is a muscle that must be exercised and built up - but it can be done and you’ll be glad you did it. Don’t miss the full story on this episode of Marketing For eCommerce.
